All Black Everything

Sinners.

South of Midnight.

GNX.

Alligator Bites Never Heal.

Shiiiiiit… now, the pope, even.

Black excellence is on full display lately, and it feels amazing to bear witness to it. Hit after hit after hit, and it’s all incredibly pro-Black. I love it; I need it, even.

That was supposed to be the start of the last thing I posted, before a hectic and, in some ways, slightly frustrating summer – especially this past couple weeks, with me getting COVID for the second time (again, while still being masked and living COVID conscious). Both locally and nationally (and even internationally, let’s be real) the energy now is wildly different than it was during that time period. Things here in the US are not as good as they were at that time, and they already weren’t great; it doesn’t feel like there’s much to celebrate.

And yet, I think that’s perhaps the biggest reason to go back to that energy. I think that we need that sort of vibe, now more than ever. The feeling that our art, our history, and our unabashed energy are valid is not only true, but deeply necessary to keeping ourselves going. I’ve seen it work wonders for us, and even for other people; lighting that fire means that people have something to work with, and I for one don’t want to see that energy go anywhere.

Sinners is still my (and a lot of people’s) movie of the year. Kendrick is still winning awards off of what started as a little bit of rap beef. The pope is still black.

It’s still A.B.E. – All Black Everything.
